Are you an online course creator or coach feeling like a fraud, even when you know you're good at what you do? In this video I want to explain why this happens and what you can do to get rid of this nagging fear that stops so many people from achieving their potential.
But first, what is Impostor syndrome? Why does it even happen?
Impostor syndrome is the result of an image that your brain possesses of you. It stems from a primal part of your brain that wants to protect you from entering a situation that it feels you will fail at.
Contrary to general advice no amount of motivation or self positive talk is going to remove this fear permanently.
Let’s understand the primary reason why this self image forms in our brains. As coaches and course creators we constantly try and learn from people who are better and far ahead than us in this journey.
If I take my example, I am not the first Coach who is teaching how to build sales funnels or helping other course creators excel in their digital business. There are multiple global leaders such as Russel Brunson, Amy Porterfield, Marie Forleo, Pat Flynn and local regional leaders such as Siddharth Rajsekhar, Rajiv Talreja etc who have started this journey much before me and are far ahead in the game in terms of subscribers, customers, revenue etc.
When we watch our influencers content or social profiles, then our brains start a subconscious comparison and it starts feeling small because it evaluates your present state to where these superstars are right now. It is an emotional response based on fear.
I want you to do a quick mental activity whenever this feeling creeps up.
Rank yourself on a scale of 1-10. Maybe you are a 7/10 within your niche and the superstars that you follow are a 9 or 10/10. But remember that there is a big percentage of the audience who is below you in terms of knowledge and experience. By not sharing your unique experience and knowledge, you are doing a disservice to this group of audience and to yourself.
So, anytime you feel the imposter syndrome creeping up, rank yourself mentally and remember that there are a lot of people who could benefit from what you have to share. Have that quick internal talk. Stop scrolling and watching social media content and after a while get down to work.
